I have chosen the interior design of a local Mexican restaurant in my hometown of Elizabethtown Kentucky, called El Tapitio. El Tap, as it is known locally, strikingly resembles the interior of a Mexican adobe with clay-colored walls, and saturated with depictions of everyday Mexican culture. As you can see by the dinette set in the picture, tremendous detail is put into the effort to transport you over the border to a true Mexican restaurant. In fact, it is widely known in our area that the owner of El Tap drew his interior design inspirations from many different Mexican restaurantes from his childhood, making the place extremely popular among true-blood Mexican natives. Jennifer Cross explained this is her paper "What is a sense of space" as a spiritual relationship with a place. These natives enter this restaurant and immediately feel a sense of belonging, creating an instant bond with this space.
El Tap in my opinion is a great example of an attempt to represent another space, and taking advantage of all the senses to accomplish that. The sounds, smells, and definitely the sights are enough to entice you. Even for us Americans, we feel a narrative relationship in regards to the restaurant. By learning of places like this through movies or other historical happenings, we recognize all of the interior design and associate it immediately with the desired location. Regardless of your race or culture, this space is truly special.
