To showcase anthropometrics, I have chosen an image of the
cockpit of a modern-day automobile. Webster’s gives the definition of
anthropometrics as “the study of the human body and its movement, as well as
research into these measurements relating to people.” We take this matter for
granted on a day-to-day basis, but anthropometrics is what allows us to truly
get the most out of our surroundings, and also to be as efficient as possible
in all walks of life. For example the cockpit of this car, everything that the
driver might need is within reach. The pedals and steering wheel are most
important, so naturally they are the easiest to reach. The gearshift, radio
controls, AC controls, and dashboard controls are all right there just above
the console. Think for a second if these things were, say, on the other side of
the interior or in the backseat. This would not only cause discomfort, but also
extreme danger if a driver were to reach for something far away. All of these
items have been placed based off of previous average measurements taken of the
human body, and that is anthropometrics.
